Monash Science alumni return to campus for annual gathering

A strong feeling of camaraderie was in the air at Monash University's Sunway campus last Friday, when more than 140 alumni, students and staff attended the School of Science Alumni Gathering 2008.

The event, initiated to allow past and current students to network and share experiences, received a very positive response said School of Science head Professor Pua Eng-Chong. He said this year's event, the second to be organised by the School, included an Alumni Forum.

Four alumni - Ms April Yim, Ms Adeline Chia, Ms Carol Ng and Mr Eric Teng - took part in a forum aimed at sharing experiences with the current science students. Several Monash graduates now employed by the campus were also present. Email messages were also shared from two School of Science graduates who are currently overseas.

Ms Yim shared her work experience post graduation with the students, while Ms Ng related how she had ventured into different sectors before joining the Sime Darby Bhd to work in environmental management - her area of study at Monash.

Ms Adeline Chia, who is a postgraduate student at the Sunway campus and leads the Monash University Postgraduate Association (MUPA), also shared her Monash experience. Mr Teng, meanwhile, shared his working experience in a field unrelated to his area of study - marketing - and encouraged the students to keep their perspectives broad in selecting employment upon graduation.

Professor Robin Pollard, Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Malaysia) said the campus was grateful to students who enrolled in its early days, as their support was instrumental in early success of the Sunway campus.

He said the quality of students enrolled at the campus was high and they continue to outperform students at other Monash campuses.

Professor Pollard also commended the active participation of students in campus life and encouraged students to contribute to ensuring that the campus met the needs of students.- Jasbir Singh
