Guide to Re-enrolment in Science

Semesters: 1 AND 2, 2009

Science students should note their web re-enrolment period for the year 2009 is from

13th October 2008 to 24th November 2008.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have read and completed all re-enrolment requirements by the end of the specified science enrolment period. If there are matters about which you would like clarification, you are encouraged to seek further guidance from Ms. Lam May Yin, Course Executive or Ms. Tan Siew Gaik, Course Manager (Science Course Management Office, Building 2, Level 5) or send an email to Scienceinquiries@sci.monash.edu.my

You may also obtain information about any specific unit by accessing that unit in the www version of the HANDBOOK. The address for a unit is http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/units/CODE.html where CODE is replaced in each case by the relevant unit code. For example, to obtain details of the unit, BIO1022, CODE would be replaced by BIO1022, giving you the address http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/units/BIO1022.html

Please ensure that you are correctly enrolled. There are cut-off dates beyond which it is impossible to make changes. If you are not correctly enrolled you will not be able to obtain results for some units, and there may be other consequences also.

Students enrolled in Science undergraduate degrees:

If you have not passed all of the units in any of the earlier semesters, refer to Section A, Section B and Section C below.  If you have passed all of the units to date, refer to Section B and Section C below. You are required to enrol for both semesters one and two 2009unless you are expecting to complete your course in semester one  2009.

Please refer to the latest course maps (section B), as there have been a number of amendments to unit offerings and some unit codes effective 2007/2008.

Note: Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Food Science and Technology) must meet with the Course Executives prior to re-enrolling for 2009.

Students from the 2008 mid-year intake of the Honours program:

Your enrolment for 2009 has been recorded when you first started the course. Therefore, no re-enrolment is necessary for 2009.

Students who expect to complete their course at the end of this semester and are interested to do Honours:

Please see the Course Executive for enquiries and to submit an application (application deadline: 14th November 2008).

Section A –For students who have not passed all units to date.

You have some choice as to when you repeat failed core units. Failed elective units may be replaced either in semesters one or two, or the summer semester (subject to availability and course requirements). They must be passed at some stage. The advantage of repeating failed units immediately is that much of the knowledge that you have already gained in those units is still with you.  That knowledge will fade with the passing of time.  If the failed units are prerequisites to other units, you will normally not be permitted to enrol in those other units until you have passed the prerequisites. Whether you are required to repeat the laboratory work or other parts of the continuous assessment needs to be discussed with the Unit Coordinator in charge of the unit. If you are exempted from repeating certain component/s of a unit, you will need to fill up an exemption form (available at the Course Management Office, Building 2, Level 5), have the relevant Unit Coordinator’s signed approval and return the completed form to the Course Management Office.

There are potential complications to repeating failed units. Timetable constraints and Faculty policies may limit the choice of units or the number of units in which you can enrol. (You will need to check that the units for which you enrol do not have serious clashes – preferably no clashes at all).  In addition, the unit may not be offered in the semester you wish to enrol for. It may now not be possible to complete the course in minimum time. The normal full-time load for undergraduate Science students is 24 points per semester.

Please refer to your relevant course structure and the list of units online (web address listed below) for assistance in planning your course. You are highly encouraged to discuss your selection and study program with the Course Executive.

Other Important Information Regarding Re-enrolment for 2009

 Failed units

If you fail unit(s) in semester two 2008, which are a pre-requisite or a co-requisite for units that you have enrolled into for 2009 your enrolment in the upcoming units will be shown on your Monash portal as “INVALID”. You must remove all INVALID units and replace them with different units.

Course transfer

When applying for a transfer to another course you should re-enrol in your current course as per normal and discontinue your course if you receive an offer for your new course.

Intermission (Leave of absence)

If you wish to apply for intermission you must do so by submitting an intermission application form to the  Science Course Management Office during the designated science re-enrolment period. Failure to do so may result in your enrolment becoming INACTIVE and your course may be discontinued for failing to re-enrol.

If you apply for intermission for semester one 2009 only you must still enrol in units for semester two 2009.

Please note: different academic and financial penalties may apply depending on when you apply for intermission. You should refer to the principal dates for more information.

Course discontinuation

If you wish to completely withdraw from your current science course you must do so by submitting the withdrawal form to the Science Course Management Office or the International Student’s Unit (for international students). Please refer to the principal dates for cut-off dates for discontinuing your course without penalty.

International students

International science students on a student pass must ensure that they are enrolled in a full time load of 24 credit points (4 units) for each semester to comply with the Malaysian government immigration guidelines.

You must contact the Science Course Management Office if you wish to discuss an enrolment of less than 24 credit points in either semester. You will also need to consult the International Student Services Unit regarding this matter.

Study Abroad and exchange students

Students intending to enrol in a study abroad or exchange program in 2009:

If you are intending to enrol in a study abroad or exchange program in 2009 you are still required to re-enrol into units for both first and second semesters at Monash. Once your study abroad/exchange program has been approved, you will be required to amend and finalise your enrolment prior to going overseas.

Unit amendment

Once you have re-enrolled into units for the upcoming academic year you will be able to access WES and change your enrolment during the periods provided in this link:
